Planning a Trip to Sri Lanka in November

Sri Lanka is a great place to visit throughout the year, but with the Coronavirus restrictions getting lifted, November is bound to be the best time in 2020 to make a trip to this paradise island. Educate yourself with the 101 on visiting Sri Lanka, in the month of November, to make the best out of your experience.

What’s the Weather Like in November?

The months of October and November fall between the southwest and northeast monsoons. This time is known as the “inter-monsoon period”, in Sri Lanka. Rainstorms are evenly spread throughout the island, although the amount of rainfall is less than in the monsoon season. Strong winds and thunderstorms are common. Most of Sri Lanka experiences a tropical climate throughout the year, but November provides the best weather conditions for those who prefer a cold breezy climate.

What Should You Pack?

As the weather will be rainy in Sri Lanka, make sure to pack raincoats with you. It would be smart to carry a shawl or a light jacket to fend off the cold in the hilly region and avoid getting sick. You should also pack mosquito repellent and be updated on the vaccines. Have basic first-aid including Vitamin C, paracetamol, Piriton and aspirin, with you at all time.

November Activities:

November is Sri Lanka’s off season, which only means that you can enjoy everything at a much slower pace, basking in the glory of the beauty of the country, taking your time. This is the perfect period to enjoy Colombo, as the usually crowded city isn’t bustling with tourists. You could visit the museum, Gangarama Temple, hit the Pettah market, experience a unique night life, and try amazing street food. Spending a day or two in Galle, marveling at the European architecture and the splendid seas of Southern Sri Lanka is also a wonderful way to enjoy your September vacation. You could also take a train ride up to Kandy to see the hillside of the country, and extend the trip to the cultural triangle (Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy). It’s a great time to sign up for water sports such as white water rafting, snorkeling, canoeing, and kayaking as well.

Diwali (Deepavali) is an important Hindu holiday, wherein devotees make offerings to the goddess Lakshmi, goddess of wealth. Translating to mean “festival of lights”, this holiday usually falls in October or November (14th November in 2020), and stands true to its name. You will witness fireworks, warm candles and even be fortunate to taste delicious sweet treats.
